What Does The Bible Says About Depression

Depression, according to psychology is a state of the mind producing a serious, long-term lowering of enjoyment of life or inability to visualize a happy future. It is also a period of unhappiness or low morale which lasts longer than several weeks and may include ideation of self-inflicted injury or suicide.

Depression brings you down to zero level, it’s as a result of certain occurrences that have occurred or are occurring in your life.

The world today is full of challenges (expected and unexpected). One may begin to question his/her existence due to the challenges they face.

Depression arises when one is unable to withstand the pain and stay happy despite the tribulation.

It’s difficult to be stable in a state of a stressful and difficult situation. Problems can stretch us beyond our bearing limit, at this point you might find yourself becoming depressed gradually. Majority find it so hard to manage their problems.

The mind and the brain work together, so psychologically, what your brain can’t control your mind can’t handle it, which results in unhappy moments that cause depression.

If you are experiencing depression you need to seek help from a therapist or a psychologist and most especially from the word of God.

The bibles’ thoughts about depression

We draw strength from the word of God, only the word can make you recover totally from depression. The word of God made us understand that God is always with us through thick and thin even in the midst of tribulation he is with us.

The bible made us understand that God is aware of our trials, in fact, whatever happens to us is not without his permission, he knows we can handle it and get over it.

He has assured us that he will make way for us in such a terrible situation.

1Cor 10:13 says “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it”.

The bible did not really talk about depression but there are scriptures that talk about people who suffered depression and how they drew strength and courage from God’s word. Examples of such scriptures are Moses in the book of (Numbers 11: 10-16), David (Psalm 51; Psalm 32: 1-5), Elijah (1 Kings 19:1-18), Job, Jonah (Jonah 4:1-11), and the Psalmist (Psalm 73).

God encourages us to stay calm in times of trial. There is nothing you are going through now that is not common to man, someone, somewhere and somehow must have experienced such. Instead of worrying over it why not turn to God than allowing yourself to be mentally, physically, and emotionally drained by depression.

Depression is never a good experience, it drains you and puts you in a state of confusion. The best way to overcome depression is choosing to be happy in the midst of your troubles. Internal joy irrespective of what surrounds you heals your wound and gives you hope. When you find happiness in God’s word and draw your strength from him, then the devil can not get to you.

When David lost his son after spending so much, he fasted and prayed for God to heal him but in the long run, he died. David would have fallen into depression considering his loss and other challenges that have occurred in his life but he refused to be affected by all these, we read how he danced and praised God. This singular act took his pains away and made him happy, he chose to be happy than being sad.

Job is another person we should learn from, he was devastated and demoralized. He lost his family, friends, and properties but he didn’t give up. Finally, God came to his rescue and he was totally happy again.

There are so many other biblical stories that advise us to be happy and praise God during challenges. The more you praise God the more depression is far from you. God knows how and when to save us and take away our pains. Our problems are a test of our faith and it ushers us to our breakthrough that will glorify Gods’ name at the end.

Am I saying tribulation is good, no! But it makes us stronger and rooted in christ making our faith in God stronger.
